Pistorius case highlights South Africa’s high rate of domestic violence

The Oscar Pistorius trial has garnered worldwide attention. But it has also highlighted South Africa’s high level of domestic violence. Research shows more than 1,000 South Africa women are killed by their partners every year.
Pistorius maintains he mistook his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp for an intruder. But the narrative of intimate partner homicide makes for awkward discussion and uneasy introspection for South Africa.
On average, three women are killed by the hands of the their boyfriends and husbands each day. That means that in the 41 days of the Pistorius trial, roughly 123 women were killed by their partners
